Arshad once again displays his great comic timing, John is OK. The story is OK too, about two Indian journalists going to Kabul to cover the war story, till they find themselves and their local afghan guide in troubled water, kidnapped by a terrorist. What follows is sheer entertainment as an unlikely bond soon develops between them and makes the movie extremely interesting. About 2 hours and no songs except for the one used for promotional purpose which comes right at the beginning, means the movie is very well paced.
Verdict: Well worth a watch.

Dor

Rating 9/10

I delayed seeing this movie as it does not have a great cast, I thought; but the story here is good and leaves an impact on you. Although I had seen it about 5 weeks back, my impression about the movie is still good. It’s a story about an unlikely friendship between two women to whom destiny hasn’t been too kind to. Women oriented sad depressing art film you might think, but this is definitely not in that category. Shreyas Talpade (of Iqbal) lends some good comedy; Ayesha Takia and Gul Panang have acted well. The tag line 'Dor - how far will you go to save your loved ones?' is very apt. Directed by Nagesh kukunoor this is definitely not to be missed.

Verdict: Don’t miss.

Khosla Ka Ghosla

Rating: 8/10

“A very cute movie”…as a friend of mine quoted. And I totally agree with that. A story about a middle class Khosla (Anupan Kher and co.) family who put their entire life’s saving to buy a plot of land to build a bigger house, but few days later they find their land has been encroached by a certain Mr. Khurana (Boman Irani). The Khosla family then tries all possible ‘P’s plead, police, Pehelwans and political organization but all leads to nothing. In a desperate last ditch attempt they try something new….and that I am not going to spoil it for you….The movie is light hearted and while you feel the pressure on the family there is also a smile and laughter on your face…kudos to the director and the cast for this. The story is very orginal, Boman Irani is at his best, Anupam Kher and his two sons are brilliant. This guy Ranvir Shorey who plays the younger of the two sons has a great comic timing; he also featured as Nanoo in Pyar Ke Side Effects. Tara Sharma as Megna, elder son’s love interest, looks very effortless and surely much above my expectation, after Masti I thought that would be her last movie. See this for the story, for a good laugh and Boman Irani.

Verdict: Must See.

Pyar Ke Side Effects

Rating: 7/10

Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat would sound an odd couple and for that very reason an interesting one too. The comic timing of Rahul and Mallika is great and this makes this a brilliant comedy movie to watch. Mallika is a runaway bride from Delhi and Rahul is a small time DJ from Mumbai. Girl bumps into boy a couple of times and this leads to love. Boy is not sure whether he is ready for marriage and this leads to problems. The movie keeps you interested through out and tickles your funny bone all the way through. The pub scene where they discuss the difference between Bombay and Delhi is hilarious, so is the scene where Rahul’s friend is giving advice why super heros aren’t married yet!
Verdict: Don’t miss.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK)

Rating: 4/10

With a star cast like SRK, AB, AB Jr., Rani, and Preity it’s a bit hard to avoid this film. However in the end it just turns out to be a glorified extra marital affair story which is a bit hard to digest. Rani is married to AB Jr. and SRK and Preity are the other couple. Things are not very smooth in their marriage but not bad enough for the story to progress in the direction it goes. Looks like Karan is fast running out of fresh ideas and it all seems a desperate attempt to churn out some kind of movie with the current bankable stars. However there is some amount of chemistry between SRK and Rani, and in the end you do feel a bit for Rani. The New York back drop tries to land some kind of authenticity to the story but doesn’t go a long way. However there are a couple of hilarious scenes when Rani learns a few tricks from Shahrukh and tries to seduce Abhishek…..this one you got to see!!
Verdict: Avoid if you can..

Ladies Tailor

Rating: 0/10

Rajpal Yadav stars as the lazy ladies tailor, whose life is too mundane and nothing to look up to until a clairvoyant tells him he needs to marry a Padmini girl, who should have a mole in her right thigh!! I wasn’t expecting it to be this good, a great effort by Farhan Aktar, even SRK manages to impress, but just about. At places you do feel he is out of sorts especially when he is playing the Benaras Bhaiyya. The movie is an adaptation of Don, something I didn’t knew so don’t want to spoil it for you so will leave the discussion on any new twists right here. If you haven’t seen the trailer its right here “I am the K..K….King". Frankly SRK is becoming more and more unbearable; so far I have resisted seeing KANK. I had thought Bacchan Jr. would have been a better choice for Don, but SRK managed to hang in there. Priyanka Chopra looks good and shows a few martial arts tricks as does SRK. Arjun Rampal has done well but I wasn’t convinced with Boman Irani doing the Inspector’s (!) role the guy appears almost always to be just about to deliver something funny and IMHO I could see how difficult it was for him to keep a straight face. After the interval the movie looses a bit of pace and in a few places you do miss Amitabh but on the whole it’s a great package. See it on the big screen for max effect. To close it off and to answer your question I would say this movie is as good as the old one, but can’t say the same for SRK.
Verdict: watch it!

Golmaal (2006)

Rating: 7/10

This one is a story of 4 friends!! I think there is no story in here as none was required. It does bring to your mind fond memories of 'Chasme Baddoor'. Take Ajay Devgan out of the equation and this becomes a good comedy movie to watch. Arsahad Warsi in true terms is the main comedian (or hero if you wish) of the movie, this guy is on a roll, make the most of it while it lasts. Some scenes between Tushar Kapoor (who plays dumb) and Arshad warsi is too funny, especially the one where the plot to get rid of Ajay Devgan flops and Tushar is trying to tell Ajay it was Arshad behind the plot .....just watch that moment. Ajay Devgan's comic timing was always a suspect, here it is out in the open, he just shouldn't have been here, sometimes you wish Arshad's plot had succeeded!! Sharman Joshi (the 'Style' and 'Excuse Me' guy) is good too. Paresh Rawal is the blind guy here, in whose house all four are staying pretending to be one guy and that also his long lost son. Kitty (from Karamchand) has done well too.

Verdict: Worth a watch for Arshad and Tushar.

Tom Dick and Harry

Rating: 1/10

Story of 3 friends, one dumb(Jimmy Shergill), one deaf (Dino Morea) and one blind(some new guy). The story had some potential but this one falls flat on its nose. The jokes are too vulgar, funny moments are too few and far in between. But with Vidhu Vinod Chopra at the helm you can expect a good film. Here Gandhi’s principles are put to litmus test to see if it is still valid for today’s world. A boring exercise it might sound, but when you put Circuit and Munnabhai into the fray it assumes a totally different and hilarious dimension. I think the ‘Munna Bhai Lage Raho’ team has struck gold here. The movie is not a continuation of the first part, more in the Laurel Hardy league, where the main characters are same but a different story each time. I think this is cool, it leaves you wanting to see the duo more. I don’t have enough words to describe how good Arshad Warsi as Circuit is, he compliments Munnabhai’s character so well that without him you can’t image this or the earlier prequel. The songs are average and forgettable, probably the only downside of the movie. Vidya Balan in her second movie feels very much at home. The movie will bring to your mind a recent English movie, but that might give away the fun, but if you have to guess, one of the words in this sentence is part of the name of the movie ;-)

Shaadi Se Pehle

Rating: 5/10

Shaadi se Pehle starts of well, like a formula one racing car, the cast appear perfect for a good comedy film, Akhsay Khanna, Rajpal Yadav, Aftab shivdasani, the plot appears funny too, but quickly runs out of steam, and towards the end its almost like you are pushing the car across the final line. Sunil Shetty as the underworld don and brother of Mallika Sherawat does well. Akhsay Khanna, since Hungama has been good with comedy, there is hardly any role for Aftab with Rajpal Yadav getting more airtime then him. Aayesha Takia as the lead fails to make an impression, Mallika Sherawat as the wamp is funny at best, but doesn’t look ravishing or anything. The basic plot is about a guy who is too finicky about his health that even a sneeze would compel him to visit a doctor. During one such visit things go wrong for him and then you are left with 3 hours to watch his antics. A couple of songs like ‘Mundaya…aa bhi ja..” is good.

Chup Chup ke

6.5/10

Another one from the Priyadarshan House, another feather in the cap for Rajpal Yadav. In the eighties for a short period the duo of Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor ruled the bollywood comedy world and were mainly responsible for making a below par movie watchable. Here its Rajpal Yadav and Paresh Rawal, you wait for the love songs to get over so you can watch these guys in action, in particular Rajpal Yadav. The movie definitely has its funny moments as you would come to expect in a Priyadarshan movie. However Priyadarshan has set himself too high a bar after doing ‘Hera Pheri’ that all his subsequent movies have failed to match up to it, probably ‘Hungama’ was the best of all his later movies. The storyline is unconvincing, and for that reason you can say it is different too. I think it is worth a watch if the fast forward button on your remote is still working, just get all the songs out of the way. It also stars Shaheed Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Neha Duphia, Anupam Kher, Asrani, Sunil Shetty and Shakti Kapoor. Of the lot, Kareena delivered a stellar performance.
Verdict: Must watch for Rajpal Yadav fans.

Phir Hera Pheri

6.5/10
Sequel to the masterpiece ‘Hera Pheri (2000)’ the cast is mainly the same, out go a few like Taboo, Gulshan Grover, Asrani and in comes Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Bipasha and Rimi Sen. The chemistry between the three Akshay Kumar (Raju), Suniel Shetty (Shyam)and Paresh Rawal (Baburao) is still there, the plot is good in parts, reminds you of ‘Snatch’ and ‘Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrels’ but sadly as a whole the movie fails to live up to the expectation. But don’t let that discourage you from seeing it. See it for the pure brilliance of one man, Akshay Kumar, he almost single-handedly carries the film. The scene between Akshay and Rajpal Yadav, where Rajpal Yadav gets interested in his money doubling scheme is hilarious. A few jokes have been repeated, like the one when all 3 are fighting and Taboo walks in (here it is Rimi Sen), and baburao is missing his dhoti. The villains add their comic touch too and with Johnny Lever and Rajpal Yadav around, the director succeeds largely in keeping the movie moving along. The songs are good especially the ones from Himesh Reshammiya ‘Yaad Sataye Teri' and 'Ae Meri Zohrajabeen'. Towards the end, it looks like the movie was completed in the absence of a director as it lacks continuity, songs appear from nowhere, and it almost appears like the movie has ended and you are being shown the bad shots like in Jackie chain movies. Suniel Shetty is a lot dumber here, maybe its just age or he is maybe playing himself, baburao crosses the line of sanity too often and one wonders how Raju and Shyam keep up with him, even his sense of humour is very loud and hardly funny, sad to see this, especially as he had done so well in the first part. Well anyway if you have loved the first part, it’s difficult to resist seeing the sequel, see it for Akshay Kumar alone and you would be happy. For me Rimi was there too.

Omkara

Rating: 6/10
When I walked out of the cinema, I thought it was a 4.5/10, thinking overnight I thought it deserves a bit more. Strong language and a mix of Haryanvi and Bihari/UP accent didn’t go down well with me for a change! What I liked about the movie was that a lot of hard work and dedication has gone in to it by everyone involved. But the movie on the whole lacks pace and appears to be about 7 hour long. Two sizzler item numbers with Bipasha Basu stands out, along with the title song. Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi exceeded my expectation, but still is a bit unconvincing with his accent, although his hair style and persona looks good for the role. Playing a role with darker shade is not alien to Saif, watch his ‘Ek Hasina thi” a classic. Vivek Oberoi as Kesu Firangi reminds a bit about his debut performance but goes no where near his best. Kareena to be honest did well, although I have never liked her. Konkana Sen fitted her role well. Ajay Devgan as Omkara did well, another cool performance from him. The movie is marketed as Vishal Bharadwaj’ interpretation of ‘Othello’, so nothing new there with the story as it sticks to it. He had earlier made a classic Maqbool (based on Macbeth). Notice the O-O and M-M connection! If my trusted bollywood crazy friends are to be believed then a few more interpretation of Shakespeare’s great are on the way from Vishal. Next time I will wait for the DVD to come out. Considering the O-O and M-M connection I think ‘Hamlet’ might be named ‘Hamara Gaon’ or maybe ‘Hamra Gaon ki Kaanhi bhaiyya’.
Verdict: Wait for the DVD to come out, then wait for your friend to buy it

Gangster

Rating: 7/10

This movie starts of well, keeps going well and then falters right at the very end to become any other ordinary Hindi film. But hats off to Shiny Ahuja who played the title role and looks cool when he is not speaking. Kangna Ranaut has done well for a debut film, her voice is a bit different, more like in Meena Kumari mold, which could be irritating for some. The music is very melodious and strikes a chord with you in the very first hearing. The movie has a few twists to keep you in grossed right till the very end. There were rumours that its Abu Salem's love story, but i think its far from it. The music definitely stands out, need to get the songs now especially the 'Tu hi meri shab hai....". Not to forget Imram Hasmi also stars, and carries with him his rebel smooching image.

Iqbal

Rating: 8/10

I was not going to watch this initially, thinking it might be a take off on Lagaan. However I was totally wrong, glad I watched it, its simply a must watch for anybody who understands cricket. Its a movie about a deaf and dumb guy and how he still chases his dream to play for the Indian team. Nagesh Kukunoor has done a brilliant piece of work, I had liked his 'Hyderabad Blues 1 & 2' but hadn't enjoyed 'Bollywood calling' as I felt it should have been named 'Tollywood calling'. I need to see 'Teen Deeware' and 'Rockford' now.

Krrish

Rating: 10/10

This is a tenner just for its sheer action. Aamir and Kajol have been together at least once before, in Isqk (1997), but not paired together. Aamir flaunts yet another hair style, not that he looks any younger with that, in fact as the movie progress 7 years on, he manages to look a lot younger and smarter in the military cut. The movie is well paced till interval and then slows down, keeping in line with the love story as the central theme rather than preaching for war or peace. Even till the very end you are not sure if Aamir is going to have a change of heart or continue with his mission of Kashmir’s freedom struggle. I will leave it for you to find that out. Kajol looks gorgeous and has done well as a come back, surely the best comeback in recent times. The first half is fun filled, especially Aamir’s shayaries. There is a sequence where Lara Datta makes a special appearance, but it has almost no relevance to the movie except it gives Aamir a chance to roll off few more good shayaries…iss baazar ka dastoor kya samjhaun tumhne…jo khud bhik chuke hain, woh doosron pe daam nahi lagaya karte…or something like that. Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Jaspal Bhatti and Satish Shah have done well too.
If you are a die hard AK fan, you probably have seen the movie by now, others I do recommend it.
Verdict: Must watch for Aamir fans!

Taxi No. 9211

Rating: 8/10

Taxi no. 9211 lives up to your expectation. That John Abraham can improve so much in a comic role after his performance in Garam Masala is commendable. Sameera Reddy needs to slim down a bit; otherwise she would just be another passenger. The movie is about two people who have nothing much in common except their misfortunes and their stubborn I-will-get-you nature. Their fate crosses one morning and results in this super thrilling day which would change their lives forever. The pace of the movie is fast and fun filled, and definitely worth a second viewing. I have heard it’s a remake of ‘Changing Lanes’ but haven’t seen it myself.
Sonali kulkarni as Nana’s wife has done well. Sanjay Dutt’s prologue at the beginning of the movie is very apt especially the casual bambaiya accent he can put on so well.

Verdict: Not to be missed, if possible watch it tonight!

Zinda

Rating 9.0/10
Beware! This movie really hits you hard, saw it last night and couldn’t get it out of the mind the whole night. I haven’t seen the original Hollywood version ‘Old Boy’ but would like to see that now. Sanjay Dutt fits the role to the T. If you haven’t seen it I don’t want to spoil the fun by saying, who the other actor is. I will just refer to him by his screen name Rohit, who’s acted well too, for a change, and can be pardoned for some of his recent outings. Imagine you are a software engineer, offshore in Bangkok, married to Celina Jaitley (man we are getting spoilt for choice these days, after I got over Madhuri, it’s very difficult to find a heroine who holds your attention), and then one morning, you wake up and find yourself locked up in a cell not sure for how long? ...Not sure for what? ...eat the same food everyday, and count the years role by….14 years!....I do not like to reveal the story in my reviews, so I will stop right here. The movie holds your attention from start to finish, is well paced and very slick. All actors have played their part well, except maybe Lara Dutta who initially feels a bit out of place, but makes up for it later. The feel of the movie will remind you of Musafir, Kaante and Ek Ajnabee (Ek Ajnabee is another must watch brilliant movie which warrants a separate review itself, but in short, if you are an AB fan, take my word and just watch it).
Verdict: A must watch

Bluffmaster

Rating: 6.5/10
The movie promo for this movie was a bigger hit than the movie itself, as is the trend nowadays. The movie itself is not as fast paced or out of the world funny or slapstick comedy as the video album might have portrayed. However it has a different feel to it. It’s stylish and yet simple. Being an AB Junior fan its hard for me to write anything against him, but personally I feel he could have done a touch better. Nana Patekar is at his cool best, as always. Some of the punch line between AB Junior and Nana are quite funny. For me the movie is a dividing line between two eras, a pre-Priyanka chopra era and a Priyanka chopra era, I couldn’t help but take notice of this girl who has been around for a few years now, but looks her best here; I think she acted well too. The movie is probably inspired by the Michael Douglas movie ‘The Game’, not the central story, but just has a feel. Let me know if you think so too. Ritesh is good in parts. The chemistry between Ritesh and Abhishek is good, so is the chemistry between Abhishek and Priyanka. Boman Irani is OK. The songs fit well in the movies and almost all of them are a big hit now. The video album is a rage. Not exactly a must watch but a shade better that Bunty and Bubly, if you get a chance do see it.

Maalamal weekly

Maalamal weekly – 5.5/10

Another one from the Priyadarshan mill, it has the Priyadarshan stamp all over, a few jokes have been repeated, and the unexpected funny situation is only to be expected these days in Priyadarshan movies. But nevertheless it does manage to tickle your funny bone every now and then. Good performances by Om Puri, Paresh and Asrani. The movie scores a few points because it’s not a typical boy meets girl type of movie, however the central story is a bit weak to be stretched for 3 hours, and drags for quite some time. It was good to see Rimi Sen, its always good these days to see the hero and heroine reduced to just a character in the movie so that we can have a story. I had liked her in ‘Hum ho gay aapke’ a movie which I should have included in the worst movies ever made. Gosh can’t believe I still remember it, even Fardeen would have forgotten about it, and Apurva-Arman-Agnihotri would even deny he acted in it…that would be honest of him to be literal. Back to Maalamal weekly, Ritesh Deshmukh and Vijay Rajpal Yadav are good too. After ‘Kya kool hai hum’ Ritesh has consistently failed to live up to the expectation, but he tries nevertheless.
Verdict: See it if you have nothing much to do tonight.

The worst hindi movies ever!

This is the toughest job of all! The pile is bigger than mount Everest, and it would take more than a life time to evaluate the worst bollywood movie ever made, and by the time you would come up with a name, there might be something new out there to beat it. Nevertheless my friends wanted me to evaluate some of the worst hindi movies of late and that also whatever my brain remembers.

Main Prem ki Diwani hoon (Rating 0/10)
If I could give a negative rating I would have, but in all fairness let me give it the best possible positive rating and that is zero. This movie stars Hrithik, Kareena and AB Junior, so you would atleast expect it to be a 5 just by the star cast. But for Suraj Bharjatya the fall seem not only downhill but more of a fall of the cliff with 90 degree gradient. The animated parrot is all that I remember now of this movie, and I thank god I could forget most of the movie. I can't believe Kareena opted out of 'Kal ho na ho' to do this movie. But good for her, as I am no big Kareena fan. But AB junior should have been more discreet unless he was out to sabotage Hrithik's career by playing a special role to convince him the movie is worth it, or more possibly he just happen to be passing by the sets and got drafted in. If you want to torture somebody chain them to the sofa and play this movie once to them..but please only once.

Musafir (1/10)
With such a brilliant star cast, this is one of those movies which is best enjoyed as a trailor, where atleast you can run your imagination wild and build a story around it. The 1.0 rating is for casting Sameera reddy in the movie.

Movies rated 1.0/10
Garam Masala
Thoda sa meetha ho jaye
Vaada
Bewafa

Movies rated 1.5/10
Shaadi No. 1
Kis Kis ki kismat

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some contribution from my compassionate friends (finally some social work!)

Qaid mein hai bulbul
Neal 'n Nikki
Home Delivery

[Sandy, I tried putting Jism here, but didn't had the courage to...surely it deserves some more respect...try once again when you are alone at home ;-) ]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

=============================================
how could you forget 'qaid mein hai bulbul'?Musafir definitely warrants maybe a 5 - sanjay dutt is quite cool in the movie. Garam Masala should most definitely be a 7 at least. Would have been an 8 had it not been been for John Abraham.
-Somu (2nd May 2006)
=============================================

Rang De Basanti

Rating 9.5/10
Just saw this last week, as usual the wait was well worth it. A peach of a movie, great songs, especially the 'Aye Saala...Abhi Abhi.. hua yakeen...ki aaag hai.. mujhme kahin". Maybe the punjabi accent doesn't suit Amir a lot, but Amir is Amir and everything he does goes down well with me, he is in every sense the best of the best khans out there! Great work by co stars too, the movie is a bit slow paced but catches your imagination well. A treat for Amir fans..waiting for Fanah now.

p.s. I think there was a gotcha in the movie, where they plan Scott's assassination. According to history the plan was to assassinate General Dyer, but as luck would have been, captain Scott was the one who gets killed. In the movie they kind of portray that the plan is to kill Scott.
